Six stages, three climbs, three descents, and a day of rocking fun

Last night Yeti Cycles hosted the Giddyup Getdown where we released the course stages and celebrated the 1,200+ hours of trail work our volunteers have put in on JeffCo trails this year. We want to thank our other sponsors and supporters including JeffCO Open Space, Laws Whiskey House, Earth Treks, Proudfoot, MTB Enduro Training, Vida Skills Clinic (who were giving away a free clinic for 9/17!) and, of course, New Belgium Brewing for the refreshments.

Golden Giddyup 2016 Course Map v3If you weren’t able to make it, here are the details you’ve been waiting for: six stages, three climbs, three descents, and a day of rocking fun. Our riders will take off in waves of 12 every five minutes starting at 7:30AM on race day, with the Chimpex and NTM course riders starting shortly after the full course.

Let’s remember one key thing: be safe, don’t be stupid. If you get cited for riding unsafely between now and race day, we’ll yank your registration. We have this amazing opportunity — let’s not screw it up.

PS: We need volunteers! Tell your friends, family, and share around in your networks. We have spots to fill throughout the day for course marshals, expo assistance, timing and all around the event. Most shifts are 3 hours, so plenty of time to take in some of the excitement while volunteering out on the course and still enjoy the festivities at the expo in Lions Park.

Introducing the Peak Pedalers

Introducing the Peak Pedalers

The 31st annual Ride the Rockies race starts Sunday in Carbondale and OnSight Public Affairs will be there, pedaling, taking photos, managing social media and sharing stories. We love this partnership, now in its third year, with the Denver Post Community Foundation and other sponsors. What an amazing way to see our beautiful state! It’s also about community and supporting great causes. This year, we’re engaging more of the RTR community with guest blogs written by the Peak Pedaler team. Jessica from Littleton, Scott from Richardson TX, Paul from Olathe and Diane from Albuquerque are our guest bloggers who are riding the race and sharing stories. Read more about them here and enjoy their blog posts! We’ll be there for 6 days of riding over roughly 400 miles and more than 29,00 feet in elevation gain, ending Friday in Fort Collins.

Giddyup!

Giddyup!

After two years of hard work, race organizers are opening up registration for the Golden Giddyup next Tuesday, March 29th. The Giddyup will be an end-of-season celebration of all things mountain bike on the Front Range, and the event has been built with that goal in mind, and will feature bikes, beers, bites, and – obviously – a petting zoo, among other entertainments.

The event organizers’ deal with JeffCo Open Space is pretty simple: Giddyup riders and supporters make 600 hours of trail work happen this summer and in return Jeffco Open Space will close their trails for the first time in their 40+ year history for the event. Proceeds from the race will be invested back into Jeffco trails. Organizers are focusing their stewardship on three parks: Apex, Chimney, and North Table Mountain. Take a minute, check your calendar, and let the organizers know when you can pick up a shovel or a rake to put a few hours into shaping the trails in your backyard. It’s cross-training at its best!

The event has hit its 600 hour goal the past two summers thanks to the leadership of guys like Al Head, Giddyup Stewardship Commander. And with new partners like the ColoRowdies on board, it is sure to hit and exceed its goals this summer. There are Park Coordinators for each park, and each park has a team of dedicated volunteers – learn more and sign up to #shapewhatyoushred here.

When registration is opened next week you’ll see there are three events rolled into one: individual loops on NTM and Chimpex (Chimney and Apex), as well as a full course combining the two. And the race format is what is lovingly being called an Endurondo.

Since this is the event’s first year and organizers don’t know how many riders to expect, there will be do two waves of registration starting on March 29th and on April 19th.

Registration for the world's first ENDURONDO* opens March 15

For those that make it into the first wave, it’s gonna cost you less. So don’t dilly dally, get online and register for the best event on two wheels Golden has ever seen.

Behind the scenes at the USA Pro Challenge

For seven days, hundreds of the world’s best cyclists roll through Colorado for the USA Pro Challenge. This year’s route, starting in Aspen and finishing in Denver, featured over 500 miles of riding, a high-altitude time trial in Vail, throngs of cheering fans as the riders raced through Boulder, Golden, and Denver, and 2013 winner and hometown favorite Tejay van Garderen finishing on the 1st place podium yet again.

OnSight had the opportunity to travel with the race for the full tour. Here are some behind-the-scenes shots from America’s Race!

Jens Voigt’s final race was both inspiring and tough for his biggest fans, including Ben. He spent the week turning Jen’s trademark phrase “Shut Up Legs” into “Shut Up Retirement”.

Every year the antlers get larger… first deer, then elk, now moose. That’s one heavy piece of head gear.

The finish in Colorado Springs was fantastic.

Finish line in Denver was well attended, with over 200,000 spectators downtown.

Since several of OnSight’s staff live in Golden, watching the pro’s climb Lookout Mtn (our local hill) was both exciting and humbling.

Overall, race week is a great reminder that we are truly blessed to live in such an amazing place. Cheers Colorado

Be a Plain Pedaler

Pedal the Plains looking for three or four enthusiastic riders who share our excitement for bike culture in Colorado’s Eastern Plains to join forces with the ride and become “Plain Pedalers”. Plain Pedalers will help capture the spirit of Pedal The Plains and tell the story of this fall’s ride and the culture of cycling.

What does it mean to be a Plain Pedaler?

As a Plain Pedaler, you will get one free entry into Pedal The Plains 2014.  You will have the opportunity to tell your story by sharing photos of training, riding and exploring the state during the event, as well as during the weeks leading up to the ride. All of your content will be featured on the Pedal The Plains website and shared by Pedal The Plains social media.

Who is the ideal Plain Pedaler?

The ideal Plain Pedaler is someone with an interesting perspective and a knack for storytelling or photo-taking. They are willing to write a blog post every couple of weeks in the months leading up to the ride, and to post stories or photos every day during the event itself. They are savvy on social media, and willing to participate in conversations and sharing their work online.

You entries are due by Sunday, July 25th.
